In 2019 I made an elaborate power point around this very question of the best bird, with ranked criteria. My best bird was and still is the crow, my worst bird the peacock. Thanks for this.
I love the Hoopoe bird with its distinctive crown of feathers. I've seen them several times in Israel's Galilee. It is Israel's national bird. Hoopoes migrate throughout much of Africa seasonally each year. Their beauty and far-flung adventure both appeal to me.
My best bird is the ruby-throated hummingbird, the ones that flood to my parents' back porch from April through September (and a little bit into October), keeping my parents' kitchen a sugar water factory for that entire chunk of the year. Their chirps and dive bombing and perches and hovers are so delicate and somehow also so fierce; finding out they like the rain, too, even though I'm confident that a single well-placed raindrop would fully knock them off course... and maybe cause a tiny concussion.
I’ve never picked a favourite bird before - but I think the English robin red breast would be in the running - long recognized as a symbol of happiness and good fortune and they do say - when robins appear - loved ones are near - I like that thought
My favourite bird is the Secretary bird of South Africa https://blog.londolozi.com/2020/08/17/the-south-african-significance-of-the-secretary-bird/#:~:text=The%20Secretary%20bird%20is%20represented,the%20nation%20from%20its%20enemies.

I loved this reading so much. My off the cuff response would be NZ's kiwi.... for no other reason than that it is so cute :)
